When Siding Needs Replacing

Siding rarely fails all at once. It gives you warning signs, and most homeowners wait past several of them.

  • Chalking: a powdery residue on your hand after touching the siding, meaning the surface has broken down
  • Fading that is noticeably worse on the south and west elevations
  • Cracks, splits or panels that have come loose after a storm
  • Warping or buckling, usually from panels fitted too tightly to expand
  • Soft spots underneath, which means water has already reached the sheathing
  • Rising heating bills, which can point to failed or missing insulation behind the siding
  • Paint that will not hold on wood siding for more than a couple of seasons

The soft-spot symptom is the urgent one. Once water is behind the siding it is working on the structure, and the cost of the job climbs with every month you wait.

Why Vinyl Suits the Ohio Valley

Cincinnati weather is hard on an exterior in two opposite directions. Winters swing repeatedly across freezing rather than staying cold, and every cycle works at joints and seams. Summers are humid enough to swell wood and push moisture into any gap.

Vinyl does not care. It will not rot, swell, corrode or need repainting, and insulated vinyl adds R-value to a wall that may have very little. Wood looks better to some eyes and needs maintenance every few years to keep doing so. Fiber cement performs well and costs more, and it is a heavier, slower job.

For most homes in this market vinyl is the sensible choice, and it is what most of our customers fit.

The Part Most Quotes Skip

A re-side is won or lost behind the old panels.

When the old siding comes off we see the sheathing for the first time. On older Cincinnati homes there is frequently water damage around windows, at the base of walls and behind failed flashing. Sometimes there are two or three earlier layers to remove first. A contractor who quoted without allowing for that has two options once the wall is open: absorb the cost, or come back to you with a change order.

We look for the signs before quoting and tell you upfront what we might find. If the sheathing is sound, the job runs to the estimate. If it is not, you knew that was a possibility on day one.

Fitting Vinyl So It Lasts

Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, and it has to be fitted loose enough to do it. Panels nailed tight cannot move, and that is what causes the buckling you see on homes where the siding is only a few years old. It is a fitting fault, not a product fault, and it is the single most common thing we are called out to correct on somebody else’s work.

Our crews fit siding every working day. That is the whole argument for not subcontracting.

How Long a Re-Side Takes

Most single-family homes take three to five working days from tear-off to final walkthrough. A larger home, a difficult elevation, or sheathing repairs found along the way can extend that. Weather is the usual reason a job runs long in this climate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Siding

  • Can You Fit New Siding Over the Old Siding?

Sometimes, but we generally advise against it. Going over the top hides whatever is happening underneath, adds weight, and makes any future problem harder and more expensive to find. Tearing off costs more upfront and is almost always the better decision on a home you plan to keep.

  • How Long Does Vinyl Siding Last in Ohio?

Quality vinyl fitted correctly typically lasts several decades here. What shortens it is poor fitting rather than the product: panels that cannot expand and contract with Ohio temperature swings buckle, and that is what you are seeing on homes where the siding has failed early.

  • Will New Siding Lower My Energy Bills?

On its own, modestly. Combined with insulated siding, or with house wrap and insulation added during the tear-off, considerably more. If energy cost is your main reason for the project, say so at the estimate and we will price the options that actually address it.

  • Do You Replace Soffit and Fascia at the Same Time?

Usually, and it is worth doing together. The roofline is already accessible while the crew is set up, and old wood fascia behind new siding tends to be the next thing to fail. More on soffit and fascia.

  • Can You Match My HOA’s Approved Colors?

Yes. Many Warren and Butler County associations regulate exterior color and material. Bring us the guidelines and we will build the options around them. This comes up most often in Mason and West Chester.

What Siding Customers Say

“We contacted Superior though their easy to use online form. One of the owners Peter promptly called us back within a day to schedule our siding estimate. We then met with John Wilson who’s also an owner and he worked out a very good deal. Our home had a lot of extra wood trim pieces that needed to be removed to make the walls even. The installation team was so skilled that you would think our home was built with this siding! The lead installer (also named John) and his team were very conscientious. You could tell they really take pride in their work. Once the job was started, the men worked every day until completion and even worked through some rain. We highly recommend this company to anyone looking for windows, siding, or roofing. Thanks for everything!!”

“Superior was amazing. We had some siding work done by a different company that we were unsatisfied with and Shane came out, quoted the job and got back to us in a very reasonable amount of time. Shane and John were a pleasure to work with from the beginning. They explained everything they could, answered whatever questions we had and maintained contact until the job was finished. They made sure the job was completed in a very timely manner and that we were satisfied with the work. 5 Stars! Would recommend to anyone!”
