What Soffit and Fascia Actually Do
The fascia is the vertical board running along the roof edge: it is what your gutters are fixed to. The soffit is the horizontal underside between the fascia and the wall.
Together they close off the roofline. Fascia carries the gutter and keeps water off the rafter ends. Soffit lets the attic breathe through its vents while keeping birds, squirrels, wasps and rain out. When either fails, the failure is rarely cosmetic for long.
